Welcome to Hope Retreat Ranch!
Hope Retreat Ranch provides therapeutic horseback riding for adults and children with disabilities. This progressive form of therapeutic activity allows riders to control both the horse and their own bodies, fostering self-confidence, responsibility, and teamwork. The experience creates a special bond between rider and horse, promoting personal growth and achievement.
Inspiration Behind Serving This Population:
Co-founder Janet Dean discovered therapeutic riding accidentally when she was diagnosed with lupus. She and her husband owned two horses and noticed a profound difference in a little girl down the street who started riding the horses. Intrigued, they researched therapeutic riding and certification for equine-assisted services. Janet’s journey led her to establish the Student Transition Enrichment Program (STEP), which helps kids transition from high school to the workforce, positively impacting their lives.
Hope Retreat Ranch tailors its offerings to meet the unique needs of individuals with developmental disabilities by creating a calm and peaceful environment. The ranch uses neutral and earth tones, avoids flashy colors, and minimizes noise. Visitors appreciate the simplicity and tranquility of the space, connecting with the horses and nature.
One day, an adult day center visited the ranch. Among the attendees was a man in a wheelchair, accompanied by a full-time staff member. Unexpectedly, the man expressed his desire to hug a mini pony named Misty. Misty, the party pony, roams freely, inviting everyone to pet her. When the man conveyed his wish to the staff, they brought Misty over to his wheelchair. Astonishingly, Misty turned her head and rested it on the man’s chest. Despite being physically unable to hug her, Misty instinctively knew that he wanted an emotional embrace. The room was filled with gasps and even tears — truly remarkable moments unfold at the ranch.
